The number ricocheted across social 11:39.890 --> 11:46.350 media and spooked markets, but what does it actually mean in practice? Let's start with how Bitcoin 11:46.350 --> 11:50.790 transactions work. When you send Bitcoin, your wallet signs the transaction with the private 11:50.790 --> 11:57.730 key, a secret number that proves you own the coins. That signature also reveals your public 11:57.730 --> 12:02.850 key, a shareable address which gets broadcast to the network and sits in a waiting area called 12:02.850 --> 12:08.130 the men pool until the miner includes it in a block. On average, that confirmation takes about 12:08.130 --> 12:14.550 10 minutes. Your private key and public key are linked by a math problem called the elliptic curve 12:14.550 --> 12:21.410 discrete logarithmic problem. Classical computers can't reverse that math in any useful time frame 12:22.210 --> 12:28.270 while a sufficiently powerful future quantum computer running an algorithm called Shores could. 12:29.510 --> 12:42.110 Shores is spelled S H O R. Okay. Here's where the nine minutes parts comes in. Google's paper found 12:42.110 --> 12:47.330 that a quantum computer could be primed in advance by pre-computing the parts of the attack that 12:47.330 --> 12:53.110 don't depend on any specific public key. Once your public key appears in the men pool, 12:53.110 --> 12:58.150 the machine only needs about nine minutes to finish the job and derive your private key. 12:58.450 --> 13:04.270 Bitcoin's average confirmation time is 10 minutes. It's alarming but requires a quantum computer that doesn't exist yet. 14:16.070 --> 14:21.190 Google's paper estimates such a machine would need fewer than 500,000 physical qubits. 14:21.810 --> 14:25.390 Today's largest quantum processors have around 1,000. 14:27.730 --> 14:31.670 The bigger and more immediate concern is the 6.9 million Bitcoin, 14:32.030 --> 14:35.490 roughly one-third of the total supply, that already sit in wallets where the public 14:35.490 --> 14:42.370 key has been permanently exposed. This includes early Bitcoin addresses from the network's first 14:42.370 --> 14:47.450 years that used a format called pay to public key where the public key is visible on the 14:47.450 --> 14:53.090 blockchain by default. That's a little concerning honestly because 15:14.310 --> 15:19.670 I'm sure there are some people out there that send to the same address or receive to 15:19.670 --> 15:24.330 the same address for whatever reason and so if it's been used repeatedly for you to get 15:24.330 --> 15:29.870 funds for your project or if you're a creator and you are getting paid through Bitcoin and you 15:29.870 --> 15:35.870 have your public address out there that address could be used to essentially hack your wallet? 15:36.310 --> 15:42.770 Is that what they're trying to tell us? Yes if you reuse the same address it makes it more 15:42.770 --> 15:48.690 vulnerable to well we already knew that it made it more vulnerable to being spied on 15:48.690 --> 15:53.690 so I made it less private if you reuse the same address so a lot of us are already in the 15:53.690 --> 15:59.630 practice of generating a new address for each transaction it's just it's just best practice 16:01.710 --> 16:07.470 so there's that but you know a lot of people don't they haven't listened to that they just you 16:07.470 --> 16:11.670 know they just see how it works and maybe they use the same address forever.
